BIG VOICE- the Story of an Accidental Alto
Moya Simpson
is one of Canberra’s best loved singers, known for her singing of songs
of political satire and world music, for her leadership of choirs, and
for her voice workshops. She can holler, yodel and chant her way through
high notes and low notes, in all sorts of styles and voices, with humour
and tenderness, poignancy and power. And she inspires many people to
follow her passion for the human voice through her work with choirs.
But
Moya
only discovered that she could sing at the tender age of 35.
Big Voice
is
Moya’s autobiographical show that
blends storytelling, music and theatre to depict the people and
events that have shaped the story of her voice discovery- a discovery of
not just a singer’s voice, but also a political voice, and a woman’s
voice.
Big Voice
also brings widely acclaimed
Sydney-based jazz saxophonist Sandy Evans to perform with
Moya. Sandy’s extraordinary skills
and improvising talents bring another dimension to this highly original
production.
Big Voice is
directed by Melbourne’s John Bolton,
and takes you on a joyous and hazardous journey from London suburbs to
East London slums, from multicultural Sydney to cabaret in Canberra.
Moya’s story comes alive as
she gives song and voice to the
colourful characters she meets along the way
and
charts the lows that stop
her singing to
the highs she feels when she takes the plunge to find her voice all over
again.
Big Voice
is Moya’s story, but is also a
universal story that will touch anyone who has ever taken a risk, or
wished they did. It is heart wrenching, funny, dramatic and, above all,
honest.
